Matt has a way with words. When put to music the result is nothing short of genius. He's recently come off a sold out tour of Aus after winning the Australian recording industry award for song of the year for the second year running. His songs are a staple of Australian radio which have earned him several single figure finishes in triple J's hottest 100. He also has a deep love of the sea...and his new single fin.
When the topic of the definition of surfing came up around our kitchen table he came out with "Surfing is marrying movement to an uncontrollable force". I liked it & asked him to elaborate. Here's what he said:
"You are essentially trying to manipulate your body in order to ride something that is uncontrollable. That's the thing about water, if you are not of a similar substance or in a similar frame of mind then you cannot be the same as it, it will just push you around. I guess professional surfers push it to that limit, that's why it's impressive, they will aggressively go about throwing themselves around a wave but still being able to stay married to it. Pro surfing is like Jazz, you get as far away from the beat as possible without losing it. Like in free form jazz if the pace is here (starts to tap the table in time) they're going (sings/scats syncopatedly whilst keeping time with his hand) That's what pro surfers are doing, it's musical! just a different kind of frequency...actually, it's a different kind of vibration"
